Frequently Asked Questions

Coffee

Q: Should I order whole bean or ground coffee?

We offer both freshly ground and whole bean coffee. Pre-ground coffee can offer a vibrant and delicious cup of coffee if consumed within the first week after being opened. But for the best coffee experience, we highly recommend purchasing whole bean coffee and grinding it fresh yourself using a burr coffee grinder. We recommend the Baratza Encore not only for its great performance but for its long term reparability and customer service.

Q: What is the best way to store coffee and how long will it last?

To maintain freshness and quality, our coffee bags are designed with one way degassing valves and re-closeable zippers which are much better than bags that you have to fold over and secure with a tin tie. After re-closing the bag, you will want to squeeze the bag forcing any excess air out the valve. Oxygen is roasted coffee’s enemy.

It’s best to store your coffee away from light and in a cool, dry place at room temperature. Storing in a refrigerator or freezer is not recommended as your coffee may absorb odors and condensation can occur which can promote coffee degradation and mold growth.

Unopened bags of coffee are best consumed within 90 days from roasting. After opening your coffee, we recommend consuming pre-ground coffee within a week and whole bean coffee within 3-4 weeks for best possible freshness and flavor.

Q: How much coffee should I use when brewing?

For the most flavorful cup of coffee, we recommend the Specialty Coffee Association’s ratio of 55 grams of coffee per liter of coffee. We know….. the metric system. But it really is the best way for measuring coffee as it ensures consistency. We recommend using a digital scale. Did you know many of our founding fathers such as Thomas Jefferson were big advocates of the metric system?

But for you holdouts, you can use 2 tablespoons of ground coffee per 6 fluid ounces of filtered water.
